Privacy Policy

Textu is a private, ephemeral chat application built around end-to-end encryption. This page explains what data is involved when you use it and how it is handled.

What we do not do

• We do not read, store, or have access to the actual content of your messages. Messages are encrypted and decrypted on your own device, using a key that only you and the person you are talking to ever hold.
• We do not require an account, email address, or phone number to use Textu.
• We do not sell or share any data with advertisers or third parties.

What is stored, and where

• On your device: your codes, saved conversations, and encryption keys are stored locally in your browser (using localStorage and IndexedDB). This data stays on your device and is not sent to us in readable form.
• On the server (temporarily): encrypted messages are relayed through our server so they can reach the other person. If the recipient is offline, the encrypted message is held briefly until they come back online, then delivered and removed. The server never has the key needed to read the message content.
• Push notifications: if you enable notifications, your browser's push subscription endpoint is stored so we can deliver a notification when a new message arrives. The notification itself does not contain your message content.

Your private code

Your code is what lets someone connect with you inside Textu. Anyone who has your exact code can join that conversation — so share it only with the person you intend to talk to, the same way you would share a key to a private room.

Cookies and analytics

Textu does not use advertising cookies or third-party analytics/tracking scripts.

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, the "Last updated" date above will reflect it.
